This year, I’m trying something a new. A little more on that later because I’m still trying to get some things in place. Related to that, I went down to Tucson for an extended weekend. The first trip, I had gone with the intent of visiting the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum and eating at El Charro. Day 0: The Road, you find
Somewhere in the mountains and forests of northern Arizona, a red hatchback flies around turns much faster than should be taken. The sound of the road singing under the tires is drowned out by the loud and fittingly fast music within. Miles pass alongside endless pastures near, and a reddening sky afar. Saying that you’re going to Mexico seems to frighten a certain swath of Americans. “The news said that Mexicans are (insert unfriendly adjective)!” No, calm down. This is my third time to central Mexico and Chapala and Ajijic are still some of the most beautiful and friendliest places I’ve ever been. My friends graciously offered that I stay in one their houses and even got most of my meals for free or at heavily discounted prices. As a bonus prize, I even played international wedding crasher for one night. One thing I do know is that Mexicans really know how to party. Continue reading

My own notions of a city I’ve had dreams of visiting since childhood stood both verified and delightfully proven wrong. Rome is quite possibly the most historically compact, deep, and dense city in the world. I’ve been around the world but Rome was incredibly impressive in both its modernity and antiquity. Strong contributions to architecture, cinema, and the sports world. A city that has forcefully yet expertly woven itself into the fabric of United States history.
